How a Green Operations Hardscape Is Built

Every project follows a proven five-step process that Travis has refined over two decades. This is how we deliver consistent results on every job.

1

Consultation & Site Visit

We start with a free on-site consultation where we walk your property, discuss your vision, and assess the conditions. Grading, drainage, soil type, and access all affect the design. You will get honest feedback on what works best for your space and budget.

2

Hardscape Plan, Pattern, and Product Choices

We create a detailed design plan and help you choose materials from our Unilock product line. You will see color options, patterns, and textures before any work begins. We also provide a clear, itemized estimate with no hidden costs.

3

Site Preparation

Proper preparation is where most contractors cut corners. We excavate to the correct depth, install geotextile fabric where needed, and build a compacted gravel base that meets Unilock specifications. In St. Louis, our clay soils demand extra attention to base preparation and drainage.

4

Installation

Pavers are laid by hand according to the design plan, with consistent joint spacing and precise cuts at borders and curves. Edge restraints are secured, and polymeric sand is swept into joints. Every course is checked for level and alignment.

5

Final Walkthrough & Cleanup

We compact the finished surface, apply a final round of polymeric sand, and clean the entire area. Then we walk the project with you to make sure every detail meets your expectations before we consider the job complete.

Hardscape Materials Chosen for Missouri Weather

The materials make the difference between a hardscape that looks good for a year and one that looks good for 25 years. As an authorized Unilock contractor, we install premium products backed by industry-leading warranties.

Unilock Pavers

Unilock manufactures some of the highest-quality concrete pavers available. Their EnduraColor Plus technology keeps colors vibrant and resists fading from UV exposure. We carry their full product line including Beacon Hill, Brussells Block, Rivercrest, and Artline series.

Unilock pavers are rated to withstand 8,000+ PSI of compressive strength, roughly three times stronger than standard poured concrete. That durability matters in St. Louis, where temperatures swing from below zero to over 100 degrees in a single year.

Natural Stone & Other Materials

Not every project calls for manufactured pavers. We also work with natural flagstone, limestone, bluestone, and river rock for walkways, patios, and accent features. Natural stone gives a more organic, rustic look that pairs well with certain home styles.

For retaining walls and structural elements, we use concrete block systems from Unilock and other trusted manufacturers. Every material we specify is chosen for both its appearance and its ability to perform in Missouri's climate.

Hardscaping FAQ

Hardscaping costs vary based on the scope of work, materials, and site conditions. A basic paver patio starts around $3,000 to $5,000 for a smaller space, while a full outdoor living area with a patio, fire pit, seating walls, and kitchen can range from $25,000 to $75,000 or more. We provide free, detailed estimates so you know the exact cost before any work begins. Unilock pavers typically cost 10-20% more than standard pavers, but the quality difference in materials and color retention makes it a worthwhile investment.

Timeline depends on the project size and complexity. A straightforward patio or walkway usually takes 3 to 5 days from excavation to completion. Larger projects with retaining walls, outdoor kitchens, or multi-level designs can take 2 to 4 weeks. Weather also plays a role in St. Louis, especially during spring when rain delays are common. We provide a realistic timeline during the estimate and keep you updated throughout the project.

Interlocking concrete pavers are the most popular and practical choice for St. Louis hardscaping. Unlike poured concrete, pavers flex slightly with ground movement from freeze-thaw cycles, which prevents cracking. As an authorized Unilock contractor, we recommend their products because of superior color retention, 8,000+ PSI compressive strength, and industry-leading warranties. Natural flagstone is another excellent choice for patios and walkways where a more organic look is preferred. During your consultation, we will recommend the best material for your specific project and budget.
